Sophie and Ian's Buttercream Wedding Cake at The Orangery, Maidstone

Image
Sophie and Ian were married on a very hot July day in 2017 at The Orangery, Maidstone.   Sophie and Ian chose a buttercream wedding cake in a horizontal line pattern finished with sugar flowers.   The sugar flowers were based on their wedding flowers and were made to match them in the specific colours of purple, yellow and pale pink flowers with rose leaves and variegated ivy.   The flowers were placed on alternate sides of the cake on each of the 3 tiers with the foliage over handing the sides.   Sophie and Ian provided their own personalised cake topper.   The cake looked stunning on our vintage wooden crate at The Orangery and the bride and groom were very happy it.   The Orangery is a beautiful venue with fabulous gardens, if you ever get a chance to visit, I would certainly take up the offer and it’s amazing for weddings too!

Christmas Bauble Wedding Cake

Image
Back in October 2020 I was asked to take part in a styled shoot at the very lovely Hayne House Wedding Venue, the theme for the shoot was “Christmas Winter Wedding” with reds and greens.   I deliberated for a long time about the design and had many ideas. I really liked the idea of a “swag” of baubles as well as some winter sugar flowers which seemed to fit well with the theme.   I made some sugar white roses, holly and red berries, mistletoe, and mistletoe berries, pinecones and variegated ivy which I arranged on the top of this 4-tier cake and as a single rose bud and foliage on the front of the bottom tier. I secured the bottom flowers in place with a wide deep red ribbon with long tails over hanging the cake. This ribbon was also used on the 4 th top tier of the cake finished with a bow and a gold and diamante brooch.   The second and third tier of the cake were combined to give one extra tall tier approx. 8 inches in height. Iced in whi...

Nikki and Richard's Pretty Wedding Cake with Personalised Cake Topper

Image
Nikki and Richard were married in 2017 at The Village Hotel, Maidstone.   Nikki chose a very pretty 3 tier wedding cake decorated with Cake Lace, pink and blue ribbon to match their theme and bridesmaids and finished with diamante to add a bit of glitz.   Nikki borrowed our pink pedestal cake stand which not only gave the cake extra height but matched their pink colour perfectly adding that extra bit of detail to their cake table.   The couple were very keen to have a personalised wedding cake topper that they could keep after the wedding. I made the topper using Renshaw Modelling paste so it would set hard and they would be able to keep it.   Richard is a fireman and wanted to be in his Fire Uniform, and Nikki in her wedding dress. So, to this they supplied me many photos of themselves (independently of course so Richard wouldn’t see Nikki’s dress) and I used these to create the figures.   The modelling paste figures will keep indefinitely if it doesn’t get dam...

There's a frog/toad in my kitchen..........

Image
This happened a long time ago and is a true story! So back in 1995 I moved 25 miles from my home town, close to where I live now. I moved on my own and didn't really know anyone nearby, but needed more space than my current 1 bed flat had to offer as cakes had begun to take over my life! It was a lovely warm sunny day, I can't remember the date but somewhere around 1996/1997 and I'd taken the afternoon off work to get on with a wedding cake which I was making for a wedding a few days later. At this time I was working with my friend Clare as Iced Images and we shared the work between us as we both worked full time. So I was decorating this wedding cake, no idea which cake it was so no pictures here, just me rambling. Set the scene, beautiful day and I had the back door to my dining room open and I was sitting at my table working away with my back to the door. I was working away "in the zone" absorbed by what I was a doing and then for some reason I looked behind m...

The Great Gatsby

Image
It must have been amazing to have been invited to Mr Gatsby's parties (if he was real), there was certainly no expense spared. The 1920/30s for some people was a fabulous time, letting their hair down and partying, the fabulous décor and intro into the Art Deco era. Must have been "roarin'" Gatsby themed weddings are very popular, especially as it's a great theme for a party and I was inspired to make this cake after seeing a black and gold fan design on the internet. The cake was not  totally inspired by Gatsby, as I've actually only seen the film once, more by the fan design I must admit. Now this cake was made a few years ago now, and you'll notice no sharp corners and edges on the cake which would actually add to the theme for sure, but on its own this cake is certainly striking Black and gold together are great but adding to white too is even more amazing. If I made this cake again, I would go for square edges all round but for the time being here sh...

Ruched wedding cake

Image
Following on from my previous post about not making many "white wedding Cakes" here is another white wedding cake! Although this cake is predominantly white, it does have some silver detail on it which for me breaks up the total whiteness. As well as a little silver detail at the centre of the ruche, there are also silver separators between the tiers which not only gives it extra sparkle but adds a little extra height and detail to the cake. This is a dummy cake, again made for a wedding fair, primarily to show off different and some what unusual techniques in sugar paste. They aren't unusual as such, just a little out of date, but that doesn't mean they cannot be adapted for modern cakes. The designs on the bottom tier are made from the Patchwork Cutters Church Window(  Church window side design tutorial ). This technique has been around for a number of years and I first used it on cakes over 20 years ago, I think it gives an extra "something" to the desig...

White and silver fishnet wedding cake

Image
I love silver and white together and I was inspired by the fishnet lace mat by Claire Bowman to make this cake. The bottom tier was made using the Karen Davies Pearl Effect Mould to decorate the sides of cake and finished in a white lustre. The second tier was left plain but edged as were the tall 3rd tier and top tier in two rows of diamante to tie in the sparkle and silver theme. The 3rd tier, a tall tier was 8 inches tall, iced in white but covered in silver metallic fishnet edible lace, made using the Claire Bowman Cake Lace mat, giving this fabulous effect. The top tier was another plain iced tier. The cake was finished with two sprays of white sugar roses place either side of the 2nd tier. In the flesh the cake sparkled but sadly this cannot be seen in the picture.
