What size wedding cake do we need for our wedding?

Image
This is the question I get asked a lot as I am sure you can imagine. I know that some cakemakers have a formula for working out how many portions are needed and hence what size cake a couple should have but that’s not something I am particularly keen to use and, I don’t know what it is anyway!   When discussing ideas and sizes with my couples I always suggest that they bear the following in mind: - ·         If you order a cake for 80 guests, then there is no way to make sure that each of your 80 guests all get a piece for cake. You can’t control what people eat unless it is served up to them, say at the sit-down meal. Wedding Cake with double height middle tier  ·         The number of portions your cake cuts into will depend on who cuts it. This is usually the venue, or the caterers and they are unlikely to measure each piece to 2 x 1 or 1x1 inches exactly. If you order a cake for 80, then 80 should be the minimum number of portions you get from it. ·         If you h

Beautiful rustic wedding wedding cake with a hint of Star Wars.

Kent Life is one of the most unusual venues that I have had the pleasure to deliver wedding cakes too. I love it there. It’s a farm museum, with vintage buildings and tractors. There are so many photo opportunities and your guests will have a fabulous time. Sarah and Mark chose to get married at Kent Life with a reception in The Wagon Store. For their cake, Sarah and Mark chose a log tier for the bottom on the cake with their initials carved in a heart at the front. The second and third tier was a double height cake decorated as an old-fashioned chalk board with a personalised message painted on to it. The top tier was plain iced and finished with hessian and lace. Two sprays of sugar flowers were made to match the wedding flowers and placed on the side of the cake. These included Delphiniums, scabious, lavender, ivory and yellow roses foliage.   The cake was finished with a cake topper supplied by the happy couple with a nod to a Star Wars quote. It looked amazing on our w

Amy & James's Wedding Cake at Hempstead House Hotel & Spa 2018

Image
I met Amy and James at a wedding fair, and they visited me for a consultation where we discussed their wedding ideas and plans. They were getting married at the beautiful Hempstead House Hotel & Spa in Sittingbourne in September 2018.   Amy and James were not sure what type of wedding cake they wanted at all, they liked the idea of a buttercream wedding cake, a chocolate covered wedding cake or a sugar paste cake, so rather then having to choose, I suggested we have a cake covered in all three, after all there is no law that says your cake must be entirely buttercream, or entirely iced in sugar paste etc.   The happy couple chose a buttercream cake for their bottom tier decorated in ivory rose swirls, with white chocolate cigarillos for the middle tier. The cigarillos not only look amazing but taste lovely too and are held in place with buttercream, so it followed on nicely from the buttercream bottom tier.

Tiffany and Dan's Rustic Wedding at Odo's Barn

Image
When I met Tiffany and Dan, they knew exactly what they wanted for their wedding cake, 4 tier cake with two tiers decorated as logs and two tiers in normal ivory icing.   We discussed various ideas and options but came up with the idea of the bottom tier being a log with a heart carved into the front with the couples initials and an arrow through the carved heart, the second and top tier iced in ivory icing and left plain but edged in natural hessian. The 3 rd tier was another log with a heart carved in it this time with the wedding date carved in it.   The cake was topped with a large spray of ivory sugar flowers which matched the wedding flowers including Freesia, David Austin Roses, Lisianthus, Brunia Balls, blossoms and ivory roses.   The wedding was held at Odo’s Barn in Bilsington near Ashford. It was my first visit to Odo’s Barn, and I must admit it was quite difficult to find, but oh my goodness was it worth it. The venue was absolutely stunning and so were its s

Rebecca and Ryan's Micro Wedding at One Warwick Park

Image
Rebecca and Ryan were married in October 2020, between COVID-19 lockdowns.   The happy couple booked their wedding cake with me back in 2019, long before we had even heard of COVID-19. They were having their wedding at One Warwick Park in Tunbridge Wells and ordered a three-tier wedding cake from our Timeless Classics Range, the Romance design with sugar flowers on the top.   With so many 2020 weddings being postponed, at the ending of lockdown in the summer there was a sudden flurry of weddings taking place. With restrictions placed on numbers for these weddings, guests were limited to either 30 or 15 guests, depending on when the wedding took place and have become known as micro weddings.   Rebecca and Ryan decided to go ahead with their wedding as opposed to postponing it, but this meant they could have far fewer guests than they had originally planned and therefore didn’t need as big a cake as they had ordered.   That was no problem at all, we played around with

Paul and Meena's naked wedding cake at Eastwell Manor

Image
Paul and Meena were married at Eastwell Manor, Ashford on Good Friday 2017. It was a beautiful sunny and warm spring day.   They chose a 3-tier naked wedding cake filled with buttercream and decorated in fresh fruits.   A naked cake is a cake whereby there is no icing or frosting on the outside of the cake so that you can see the stacked sponges. The internal structure of the cake with the dowels and boards is exactly the same as any iced wedding cake, even though the cake is much lighter than an iced one.   The fresh fruit adds loads of colour to the cake and makes a fabulous alternative to a traditional cake, all looking fabulous at the most beautiful Eastwell Manor.   Paul and Meena cutting their wedding cake at Eastwell Manor

Concrete Styled Wedding Cake

Image
In September 2020 I was asked to take part in an Urban Styled Shoot at Sun Pier House in Chatham, Kent. The organiser of the shoot was very specific about the style of cake she wanted for the shoot, a concrete effect three tier cake with orange flowers and six matching mini cakes. I had never made anything like this before but unusual and colourful is my thing so I was happy to give it ago. The cake itself and the mini cakes were made using dummy cakes and iced in grey sugar paste and then textured with grey royal icing to give the concrete effect. I made orange sugar anemones on long stems for the flowers. The mini cakes were made in the same way but with small individual orange flowers on the top of each cake. Sadly I couldn't attend the shoot as I was in post holiday quarantine, so my daughter kindly delivered the cake for me to the shoot in return for brunch.. By chance my friend owns No64 coffee and brunch in Rochester High Street and this is almost opposite Sun Pier House

Toni and Alex's between lockdowns wedding August 2020

Image
Toni and Alex met me at a wedding fair and came to see me for a consultation. They had an idea that they wanted a silhouette wedding cake so we designed a beautiful 3 tier wedding cakes with different silhouette scenes for each tier. Roll on about a year later and COVID-19 arrived and all weddings were on hold. As lockdown started, many weddings were postponed, many couples were left in a quandary as to what to do! Toni and Alex had booked their wedding for 8th August 2020 at Salomon's Estate, Tunbridge Wells, and as the COVID cases dropped weddings were allowed again but this time with restricted numbers. So Toni and Alex decided to stick with their original wedding date and have just 30 guests to their wedding in line with the COVID 19 requirements at the time. As you can guess as they were only having 30 guests they didn't need a 3 tier wedding cake so we had to alter the design drastically to one tier and they chose the silhouette scene of their proposal in New York to be
